A riot of colour and a riotous celebration in the streets – a Carnivale of Creole and Caribbean, Brazilian and Jamaican revellers in a gumbo gala melting pot of fantastic festivity. Mardi Gras madness – when we take to the seething boulevards arrayed in multi-coloured plumage dancing to tribal rhythms, supporting huge effigies and masks bordering on the grotesque. An ebullient atmosphere of devil-may-care with a hint of danger as the Pagan roots of all participants surface and the voodoo-trance weaves a cathartic spell of release. Beads are thrown to favoured float-riders – white beads signifying the highest honour of all.
